redhat 7.3 and apache

hi all,

well my problmes is as follows, i wanted to run teh apache server on my laptop but i wasn't sure if it was installed during system installation ( how could i now that?)

i brought the cd which has the apache rpm and on the command line (after entering hte mnt/cdrom/Redhat/rpms) i did the following command:
rpm -Uvh apache-1.3.23-11.i386.rpm

the following error came:

error: cannot get exclusive lock on /var/lib/rpm/Packages
error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - Operation not permitted (1)
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm

i tried installing another thing .. but the same message appeard ( the other thing was the apache devel .. )

i then went to KPAckage .. and when i choose the apache file and press install .. it crashed and the short description is:

the application KPAckage (kpackage) crashed and caused the signal 11 (SIGSEGv).
what is this?
an application mostly receives the SIGSEGV signal due to a bug in the application. the application was asked to save its documents.
what can i do?
report for the bug ...

now what is the problem??
could any body help?

best regards

Did you try this as root? Only root can (un)install packages.

Find out if you actually have Apache installed first. As root, try running the command "service httpd status". If it says "apache is stopped", or something like that, then you already have it installed. To start Apache, you just have to run the command "service httpd start" as root. If "service httpd status" says "httpd: no such service" (or something like that), then you don't have apache installed, or it's installed improperly.

To check for an Apache installation using the RedHat Package Manager, use the commands below:
  • rpm -q apache for printing the current version of the apache package installed
  • rpm -qi apache for printing detailed information on the currently installed apache package
  • rpm -ql apache for listing all the files in the currently installed apache package.

Hope this helps... If in doubt, check out the man page for RPM, or just run rpm --help.

Good luck!

check what rpm version you have (should have been ok)
install db3 (with rpm)

then try installing all apache packages

thanks alot guy s. it was installed and i just did:
service httpd start
and i ran .. i opened the konqueror and typed hte ip 192.168.0.3 and the test page appeared ... that was great!

everything from the laptop works fine ( the linux is installed on a laptop with a 192.168.0.3 as an ip, netmask 255.255.255.0)

now am using my desktop (192.168.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0) windows Me

the problem is that the desktop cant see or ping the laptop
they all could ping thier selves .. but the desktop can't ping hte laptop .. the laptop acts strangely though .. it pings the desktop .. i mean when i ping 192.168.0.1 from the laptop it pings it very fast less than 1 ms ..

the strange thins also is that if i pinged an ip that is not in the LAN .. it is pingable!! with the same speed of response.

i pinged 192.168.0.99 . and 192.168.0.7 ... they all don't exist in the LAN .. and i get replys from them .. what is wrong?

i would like to surf the files i have in the laptop over the network using apache .. would you please help me??

best regards
