proftpd problem - connects but doesn't send??


Hi, I just installed proftp, and everything seems to be running fine; I can connect to my ftp server, I can browse through the directories just fine - the only problem is, once I try to download a file, it 'freezes' after about 7% and the rate of data transfer steadily decreases until it just stops responding. When I check my ftp server, it turns out that my internet connection has been dropped. Any ideas?

Firewall? Do some searching on the forum and some Googling about the effects of a firewall on FTP. You will need to adjust your firewall rules. It sounds like you only have port 21 open (port 21 is the command channel, but the data channel usually happens on a high port).

with proftpd you can limit the area that will be used for passive ftp (PassivePorts configuration option). And allow that port range at your firewall. Also be sure to allow connections to port 20 (ftp-data). For more details take a look at
