Unhappy Problem with wvdial with RH8.0

Hi,
I'm a linux newbie trying to get wvdial to work with RH 8.0. I followed online instructions and configured wvdial.conf (added password,phone number, username) and resolv.conf (added two ISP nameservers). I dialed in using wvdial and everything seemed to be working but i can't seem to get a connection when using web applications like Mozilla, lynx, fetchmail.

the last few lines when dialing up through wvail:

-->Carrier detected. Waiting for prompt.
-->Don't know what to do! Starting pppd and hoping for the best.
-->Starting pppd on Monday...
-->pid pf pppd: 1331.

I also tried to ping the nameservers just to try out the connection and got no response.

If i were to dial in using the graphical interface 'Network Configuration' in GNOME, i can get a successful connection and surf the web using Mozilla, run lynx and fetchmail through the terminal window. Strange huh?

What can i do to get wvdial to work correctly so that i can function in a pure command line bash environment?

Lots of thanks in advance

Wvdial did not log in to your ISP correctly. Could you post your /ect/wvdial.conf with your user name and password xxxxx out.

I see two possible problems with your /etc/wvdial.conf. I suggest that you try the following two changes, but only one change at a time.

You have baud= specified twice. This may mess up speed autodetect to where your modem and the ISP modem never agree as to the speed they are running. Change Baud = 57600 to
Baud = 115200 and throw out the Baud = 115200 in the [Dialer Defaults] section.

The second thing to try is to put
Stupid Mode = 1
in the [Dialer Defaults] section. Stupid Mode is used when your ISP has a slightly different logon procedure than normal. Turning on Stupid Mode tells pppd not to worry about it, just go ahead as if everything worked OK.

Here is a HOWTO that may help you.

My wvdial.conf is now:

[Modem0]
Modem = /dev/ttyLT0
Baud = 57600
SetVolume = 4
Dial Command = ATDT
Init1 = ATZ
FlowControl = Hardware (CRTSCTS)

[Dialer Singnet]
Username = ***
Password = ***
Phone = ***
Stupid Mode = 1
Inherits = Modem0

I tried to use the terminal window in gnome to run wvdial Singnet:

-->Carrier detected. Starting PPP immediately.
-->Starting pppd at ...
-->pid of pppd: 1234

I pressed Ctrl-Z and tried to run other apps like lynx, fetchmail, tried pinging and it didn't work. However when i use Mozilla it works... I decided to check my confs again and found out that there are two resolv.conf in the system. /etc/ppp/resolv.conf and etc/resolv.conf. I found out that i edited the later previously and not the previous. So i edited /etc/ppp/resolv.conf and it works. Would anyone know why this is happening?

Sorry for the long message. This is for the benefit for others with the same problem.

Thanks for the help man.
