WvDial Problem

hey all.

i'm having problems with RH 8.0, alas WVDial won't detect my modem....

i had a winmodem working with redhat 7.0 no problems. i've now got rid of that and have a external 56k modem.

the problem is when i try to dial out this is returned:

wvdial[1215]: Initialising Modem
wvdial[1215]: Sending ATZ
wvdial[1215]: Sending ATQ0
wvdial[1215]: Modem Not Responding
pppd[1194]: Connect Script Failed

the Rx and Tx lights on the modem flash non stop untill modem not responding is returned.

setserial -a /dev/ttyS1 (which is the modems com port) yields:

/dev/ttyS1, Line 1, UART: 16550A, Port: 0x02f8, IRQ: 3
Baud_base: 115200, close_delay: 256, divisor: 0
closing_wait: 15360
Flags: spd_normal skip_test

again the Rx and Tx lights on the modem flash quickly. i know the modem is working perfectly, have tested it under win98.

i'm at a dead end now and was wondering if anyone had any ideas that may help me?

Thanks in advance!

[user@localhost user]# wvdial --chat
-->Initialising Modem
-->Sending: ATZ
-->Sending: ATQ0
-->Re-Sending: ATZ
--> Modem not responding.

and yeah my first step was to read the man pages, they didn't really help.
