Printing slow to start in non-KDE apps

Moved here as this seems to be a networking issue.
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...etwork-681860/
If I run netcat
Quote:
#nc -l -p 10.1.1.9:631
and select print the desktop remains useable and only the print gui is slow to appear.

I think this is a cups port issue. I have reinstalled and reconfigured cups, but the problem remains.

How would I further determine what is going on with port 631?

Further information - this problem appears to be isolated to my home network.
Connected to the net elsewhere does not reproduce the problem - then again it's not connected to a printer either. However, even if I turn the printer off - disconnect it from the server, the problem remains.

Printing is usable if I am happy to wait for 5 minutes in the first instance - after that it's fine. Something is resolving itself during the first print request, and once it's happy, printing is quick to start on subsequent occasions.

Stop Press: A warning appears to say that OOo is running under a different user id and to kill that instance in order to run as the correct user. Problem is that both users have the same name, but it appears different id's. Is OOo opening under another user id?

Would this be possible if say, a previous user was removed and then another added under the same name? I think I did this to over come a DCOP issue following an upgrade that fouled up, preventing me from signing in as the original user. I think this may be getting to the bottom of the problem.

Possibly this is not a network issue after all! and I should move this thread back to the previous forum?
