PPP0 unreliable connection

Hi there,

I am really starting to get things done with Linux now. It wasn't too long ago that I thought getting things like MSN working with Linux was impossible, dependancy problems, but I have resolved all that. (Jmsn) :P

I have got a nice new copy of Firefox 1 installed and eveything seems pretty fine. The problem is that my modem connection is so unreliable. I'm using RedHat 9 with a Wanadoo (UK) dialup with the RedHat Network Device Control util. Sometimes I have a really good connection which is really fast and works for the whole two hours (before Wanadoo pulls the plug, happens on Windows too), but other times the modem dials, then just seems to lose its thread after a little while of working very slowly.

I'm using an external Phonic Pro modem. Is there any way that I can see what the modem is doing? It only dials up with the Network Device Control util, and fails with "PPPD died unexpectedly" on things like wvdial and kppp.
