ppp as non root w/o changing perms (slackware)

I used pppsetup (very easy!) to setup my ppp connection in slackware, but it only lets me run the ppp-on script as root. I tried changing the permissions but I get some errors about not being allowed to "unlink" some stuff. Is there any way to start my ppp connection without being root? Aside from the problems mentioned, I'm wondering whether changing permissions on everything is really the best way. Also, isn't it considered a significant security risk to be connected to the internet as root? It seems kind of strange that connecting as root is required by default.
