physical gateway connections -- into same switch?

If I want to run a gateway, I've been told I need 2 NICs in my PC.

gateway eth0 <-> main network
gateway eth1 <-> switch (my subnet)
switch <-> PC on subnet

But why cant I just go :-

main network <-> switch
switch <-> gateway (eth0)
switch <-> PC on subnet

You could, but only hosts playing by the rules would use your gateway. A computer using a non-subnetted address/netmask could access hosts in your subnet directly. Do you want to allow that? Remember that a switch is a gateway device. It joins network segments.

I have a company network, and they have given me a subnet IP range that I have to but behind a gateway.
I want to access in to and out from of that subnet to and from the company network, ie no restrictions.

ie, ive been given 192.168.107.64/27
So want to configure the gateway to route traffic to the correct PC.

Whereas the company default gateway is 172.24.40.1
