oversized DNS MX query problem

Hello.

I've been having trouble making qmail deliver mail to a particular domain. The DNS MX query reply is greater than 512 bytes. I don't really want to patch/rebuild qmail (dns.c) just for one domain.

Now - the funny thing is, I've somehow gotten it across to the other domain admin people, that their DNS reply is oversized - so they've (I think) changed it - why I'm not sure is because

1) they haven't updated their serial no. in the zone file.
2) When I do a dig offendingdomain.com mx +trace I get a reply of 511 bytes
3) When I do a dig offendingdomain.com mx I get a 672 byte reply

So have they changed anything, or is the 511 byte reply just a truncation? I don't get it.

Thanks
