I've been using proprietary hardware for SAN/NAS services for some time now and recently decided to put my own together since the hardware part is not very difficult.
What I am having a problem with however is finding information on how to optimize a machine for network/storage I/O only. It's got no other services, it's only handing off samba and nfs exports.
Can someone share their knowledge on this, web links, anything which might help.
It might not be as customised as you want, but using something like FreeNAS might be the way to go.
I'm aware of this project and I've also tried OpenFiler which is quite nice but still, I am wanting to better understand where to start looking when I want to tune a machine for I/O only functions.
