i've got an old 200MMX box i decided to try and make into a firewall/router/web server using gentoo 1.4. i compiled an iptables/routing kernel, set up dhcp services, got pppoe working (verizon adsl connection), and i seem to have gotten IP masq working.

the router seems to be working just fine, i can ping everything and links everywhere, ips and names.

the machines behind the box are having an odd time tho. it seems that they can ping root addresses (i.e. sourceforge.net or google.com) but cannot ping any sub-domains (i.e. www.sourceforge.net or adwords.google.com). very odd.

i realized that i didn't have bind on the router, so installed it and ran named hoping that would help, but still the same issue. still very odd.

any thoughts? thanks.

nevermind. it must have been window's cache or something. on a reboot there was no DNS action at all (though, oddly netbios names worked just fine). will have to play around with it.
