Not connecting to sites

I dial out with KPPP, and it minimizes to the tray, etc. But I cannot connect to anything. I am only able to ping localhost and 127.0.0.1, not google.com, not my DNS server. What is wrong? I am running Debian Woody, and kernel 2.6.0.

Are you sure kppp has set default gateway? Check: 'route'. If you don't see a line with 'default' at the beginning, that're the reason.

KPPP options are correct.

When not connected, route returns:

localnet * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 etho0

When I connect, it only returns the headers. How do I fix this?

Try to enter 'defaultroute' to KPPP options (in the field for extra options).

you mean [Account] > Edit > Customize pppd arguments? Tried, no change at all. Any other ideas? I'm stumped. I've used the modem before (redhat9 and knoppix3.2hd), worked great.

What exactly does route print when you're connected? It may take some time to display it.

I didn't know I had to wait for it. Here it is (when connected). The Metric, Ref, and Use columns are all zeros:

Code:
Kernel IP routing table
Destination        Gateway        Genmask              Flags  Iface
205.231.XXX.XX     *              255.255.255.255      UH     ppp0
localnet           *              255.255.255.0        U      etho0
default            192.169.1.2    0.0.0.0              UG     etho0
Hope this helps...

I would suggest doing a command line setup first. As root (su) do pppconfig. You'll need to armed with your ISP details; username, password, phone#, DNS numbers and know your serial port. To connect the command is pon and disconnect is poff. If you have errors these will be in your ppp-connect.errors log in /var/log. Once this working KPPP should work. Youl'll need to give users permissions to use KPPP.

I did do a pppconfig initially, but that didn't help. I'll try again and report the results.

I did use pppconfig again, set everything up, and here is the resultant /var/log/syslog (removed redundancies). /var/log/ppp-connect.errors was unpopulated.

pppd 2.4.2 started
bunch of AT stings, dialing proccess
serial connnction established
using interface ppp0
PAP Authenticatio succeeded
couldn't set pass filter in kernel: invalid argument
not replacing default route to etho0
cannot determine ethernet address for proxy ARP
local ip address: 205.231.xx.xx
local ip address: 205.231.xxx.xx

Interspersed through all this is a bunch of CCP ConfReq, ConfRej, ConfAck, and TermReq, all folowed by numbers. It seems

not replacing default route to etho0
cannot determine ethernet address for proxy ARP

is the problem. Any ideas?

It may be a typo but it refers to "etho0" that should be eth0. I am not sure how your system is configured. Could be that there is not enough support for ppp in the kernel.
You may need extra modules installed. The following are the ppp modules included in my kernel as a guide;
# Ethernet (1000 Mbit)
#
# CONFIG_DL2K is not set
# CONFIG_E1000 is not set
# CONFIG_MYRI_SBUS is not set
# CONFIG_NS83820 is not set
# CONFIG_HAMACHI is not set
# CONFIG_YELLOWFIN is not set
# CONFIG_R8169 is not set
# CONFIG_SK98LIN is not set
# CONFIG_TIGON3 is not set
# CONFIG_FDDI is not set
# CONFIG_PLIP is not set
CONFIG_PPP=y
# CONFIG_PPP_MULTILINK is not set
# CONFIG_PPP_FILTER is not set
CONFIG_PPP_ASYNC=y
CONFIG_PPP_SYNC_TTY=y
CONFIG_PPP_DEFLATE=y
CONFIG_PPP_BSDCOMP=y
# CONFIG_SLIP is not set
Hope this helps.

All my PPP options are modules...except multilink and filter. Do I need to recompile? syslog produces the same output when I load the ppp_generic module. If I do have to recompile, should I run 2.4.x for the compiling process?

I think I see what the problem is; see above the default gateway is set via eth0 so your system is trying to connect via the gateway 192.169.1.2. For you to get access it needs to connect via ppp.
Go to /etc/networks/interfaces and rem (#) the line under eth0 gateway 192.169.1.2 and see if this solves the problem. You'll need to do /etc/init.d/networking stop and then /etc/init.d/networking start first though.
If you are wanting to share the connection via the network use a firewall and ipmasq.

take a look at these

do an /sbin/ifconfig to check what your current devices are and ips assigned to them, also check your /etc/resolve.conf to see if you are receiving correct dns information, veryify against isp dns server. Trying pinging an ip . Do you have a firewall running /sbin/iptables -L
