trouble connecting to certain sites

I just reinstalled RH 7.3 after trying WinXP for a couple of months on the advice of a friend (wasn't a big fan of it). Now I am having problems with my Internet connection. The problem is that there are certain sites that I cannot reach. I think this is related to my MTU (I had to deal with this while I was using Windows), but I am not entirely sure. I am on a network at my house that is connected through ADSL. I have absolutely no problems with connection speed with most sites, however, there are several sites which are unreachable. Like I said, this appears to be an MTU problem, but I don't know how to change that, or what I should change it to. The first time I used RH, my roommate (who set up our network) did all the configuring and stuff. His expertise isn't available right now, so I wanted to see if anyone could point me in the right direction. Thanks.

Subnet

Make sure you are on your ISP approved netmask. If your configured netmask is different from that of your ISP even by a little bit, you would have what is called "Selective Surf". So, give that a look.

example:

is: 255.255.255.0
shouldbe: 255.255.255.128

Go to your ISP's site to find these numbers out.

hmmm very strange this story of mtu,
windows mtu is around 15 000 or 16 000 and you usually decrease the mtu when you have a poor inet connection.

micaheli pointed out your netmask I don't know if it's your pb but at least it's not a bad idea to check it.

To me it might be a question of time out but first of all can you resolve the machine you want to reach ? Can you ping it ? Can you telnet it on port 80 ?

See ya
