Non-Root login on Samba 3 PDC

I've been playing with Samba 3.0 to provide simple authentication for the users on my network. This is a mixture of 30+ PC's mostly running Win2k (some are XP and there are still two NT4 boxes sitting around).

I've got the server configured and created the machine and user accounts, but I can't log into the domain with any user account other than "root". Anytime I try, I get "Access is denied". The permissions are set for access and I've verified the passwords, but still no go.

I've seen FAQs that seem to imply that you can only use "root" when logging in from 2k or XP, but I've not seen anything definitive.

Can anyone please shed some light here...I can post my smb.conf if need be.
