NFS Bizzare Issues

I've recently started having issues with NFS, mainly rpc timeout errors

forward info (same on client and server)

Kernel: 2.6.9
OS: Slackware-Current
Portmap v5.0
NFS v1.0.6

Basically the problem i'm having is that, exportfs -r takes ages to run, and only some of the nfs shares mount, unless i retry 4 or 5 times, samba/web/DNS etc work fine, anyone got any ideas why?

Hi!

Not that I could guarantee that this is what causes your trouble - but in my poor-mans network (two PCs with private
IPs behind a DSL router running FC1 ) the problem with rpc timeouts appeared when I was removing all lines except
the locahost line from /etc/hosts and just used IPs to grant nfs-mounts. This caused the NFS server to take ages to
start/restart and to quit service after the first (successful) nfs mount from a client. I am not aware what your DNS
configuration is, maybe you are not even sensitive to this, because you're asking some server for hostnames... Just an
idea. When I added the proper name<-> IP lines to /etc/hosts everything was fine.

Good luck!

P.S. - In my case a second symptom of the name-resolution problem was that sendmail took VERY long to start up at
boot time.
