Angry Network problem with switch

I am a Linux newbie, who is trying to setup a home network with a switch, Red Hat Linux 6.1 and Red Hat 9.0. I followed a HOWTO to the word. I assigned each computer an ip address. When I use Linux to ping the other computer I get a network unreachable error. Does this have to do with me using a switch instead of a hub? If I use windows and Red Hat 9 I can use the internet and Samba, but that isn’t what I want. Is there a good HOWTO out there? HELP!!

Welcome to LQ.

Do both of your network cards and hub ports have link lights on?

Found out what the problem was. I had the other computer setup to try to get an ip number from a server. I din't have a server that did that. Thanks.
