Switch Network

Hi all! Long time absence. How is everyone?? I got myself a dumb newbie networking question:

Can a simple network be setup using 2 PCs and a Layer-2 switch. I have a Linux box connected to a Cisco Catalyst 2950 connected to a Windows XP box. There's no router.

All I want to do is FTP a a file from one box to another.

Any assistance is much appreciated.

This shouldn't be a problem. Just hook them up with 2 straight through cables and assign them IP addresses and netmasks:
PC1 IP: 192.168.1.1
PC2 IP: 192.168.1.2
netmask: 255.255.255.0
