Question network error after win xp update!!

this is the problem:

i have a 23 pc network. They were all running windows 98 and the server is a Linux redhat 9.0 machine.
All the shared folders at that time were ok.
Yesterday i have updated all the pc's to Windows XP professional.

NO OPERATIONS MADE ON THE LINUX SERVER!!!

now get this problem:
i can create any folder or file in the linux shared folder from any windows pc, but when i create a document (word, excel) or a dwg file with autocad, i can't overwrite it from the program itself.
i.e.

i create a document on the linux shared folder with autocad.
i save it on the shared folder.

----till now, no errors----

then i re-open that file,
i modify it,
when i tray to save it i get an error message that says that i can't save it.
The only way is to save with "save as..." option.

Any suggestion????
It is a big big problem, because any software using a database on the server or an auto-save feature is now crushing!!!

PLEASE PLEASE help me!!!!

thanks a lot

You probably have to modify your samba configuration. Windows 98 didn't care about user file permissions or anything like that. Windows XP cares (well, more than 98 anyway). So I imagine that now when one person creates a file on the share, another person can't modify it because they don't have permissions.

Not that I'm an expert, but a while ago I think I had the same problem. Don't remember whether I fixed it all in the smb.conf file or whether I also had to setuid bit on the directory I was sharing (so that all files were created with the same permissions/ownership).
