network connection problem

Hi: For reasons mostly having to do with my personal laziness I am finally attempting to configure my Suse 7.0 (2.78) and as far as I can tell all is well except . . . . no network connection. Suse recognizes whatever card I have tried so far - Realtek, Sis, etc. - but when I select auto configure the dhcp fails, no ip address is assigned, etc. I have tried assigning a static IP address behind a Netgear router and going with dhcp detection behind the router and directly connection to my cable modem - nothing, nada, zip.

I read another post where someone else said they had a similar problem that was solved with a BIOS change - but I looked through my BIOS and could not figure out what he was talking about - and he didn't explain.

Anyway, the cable modem works, the cables work, the hardware all works - as usual, it's the software (I have no modem).

Any help? Thanks. (Yes I know I should upgrade at least the kernel but I'd like to get this thing running first.)

Hi:

Thanks for your reply.

I hadn't tried that but I did in the root console .... I'm not sure what was supposed to happen .... but all I got was another command line.

?
