Need to talk on ethernet with unmanaged switch

Looking to buy an unmanaged switch thinking this will allow my pc to communicate with up to 4 others. Planning to use it in a teaching environment with linux talk capability.
What I am reading leads me to think this is not going to work.
Would someone advise.

An unmanaged switch is a switch that has no "smart" features or the ability to control with some management tools. It is a dumb switch but follows the rules for a switch over the rules for a hub.

Not sure how this linux talk has much to do with the issue. If this application uses known routable transports the switch ought to work.

In addition to the previous posts an unmanaged switch is just a basic piece of networking hardware used to connect computers together. It will pass whatever network traffic is sent by any of the computers. You have not posted enough information but it should work for your needs.

Basic setup i.e. is this a standalone network or computers connected to a home LAN with a router will dictate how they are configured including linux distribution /version, IP address, firewall setup and installing/configuring the talk application.

Maybe reference in man page about braindead protocol used?

Many of those old programs could be blocked by default. They weren't very secure.
