multicast traffic from eth0 ??

Code:
[root@localhost zarniwoop]# ifconfig -a
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:04:5A:60:F5:1B
          inet addr:192.168.1.100 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
          inet6 addr: fe80::204:5aff:fe60:f51b/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:191558 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:17954 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:278745266 (265.8 Mb) TX bytes:1977853 (1.8 Mb)
          Interrupt:9 Base address:0x9400
when i run tcpdump, here's a sample of what i get over the time of not even one second:

Code:
listening on eth0, link-type EN10MB (Ethernet), capture size 96 bytes
18:34:13.410941 IP modemcablexxx.41-200-24.mc.videotron.ca.3994 > 239.192.15.206.15205: UDP, length: 1452
18:34:13.414991 IP modemcablexxx.41-200-24.mc.videotron.ca.3994 > 239.192.15.206.15205: UDP, length: 1452
18:34:13.445395 IP modemcablexxx.41-200-24.mc.videotron.ca.3994 > 239.192.15.206.15205: UDP, length: 1452
18:34:13.449748 IP modemcablexxx.41-200-24.mc.videotron.ca.3994 > 239.192.15.206.15205: UDP, length: 1452
18:34:13.505480 IP modemcablexxx.41-200-24.mc.videotron.ca.3994 > 239.192.15.206.15205: UDP, length: 1452
what gives, and is there any way to stop this? i doubt this has anything to do with the services i am running, since this traffic is there whether i am booting windows or linux.

ideas?

what is this traffic, and where is it coming from?

Hello,

That's multicast traffic. If you don't want to enable it, just type:
ifconfig eth0 -multicast

that does not stop the traffic, unfortunately.

okay so i finally contacted my ISP about this, and apparently, its normal.

as long as they dont count it as upload traffic when it comes to my bandwidth bill, its okay i guess. annoying but okay

Hello

You can also try: ifconfig eth0 -allmulti
but I will only prevent you from catching this traffic not having it on your line
If you really want it to disappear, you may configure a firewall to stop it
