I seemed to have many similar problems using kppp on my RedHat8.0
I am now using wvdial and it works like a charm! (Although I still have to shutdown my eth0, dial the internet, and bring eth0 up again in order to get out to the internet. - That's something you might think of trying)
>/sbin/ifconfig eth0 down
> (dial the internet)
>/sbin/ifconfig eth0 up
Jus rewbooted and tried it, it worked but the data trickled in at 0.1k/sec most of the time however, twice it shot up to 5-6k/sec for about 2 seconds... Any ideas?
i get a similar problem that has started in the last week or two - the connection (using kppp) connects ok, seems to hang, and then 2 - 3 minutes later starts working. Seems to have started when i moved the pc to a different phone connection in the same house, but i'm unsure why this would affect it.
i'm using fc yarrow. i have lan card, eth0, and a usr modem, at ttyS0. i use kppp to dial to the ISP using a prepaid i-net card. the problem i used to encounter is that my browzer, Mozilla, can't resolve names even though DNS settings is automatic. when i manually set the DNS, i couldn't log in to the network of the ISP, the pppd times out. i deactivate eth0 before dialing and the problem of unresolved names is gone. would somebody know why?

how do i remove the 2nd line - "route del 169.254.0.0 0.0.0.0" no work like it does on a solaris box!! What file does it get this line from? - hosts has 127.0.0.1 in it and nothing else. thanks - duncan
