Angry Modem is live and connected, but...

I have a situation where my USB Conexant ADSL modem has connected with my ISP and obtained an IP address.

I can ping various servers I know of on the internet, but I cannot use a browser (Mozilla) to browse the internet.

Mozilla complains that the url may not have been entered correctly.

I'm guessing that Mozilla can't see my connection, so how do I tell it that it is there ?

Help Please, this nOOb is getting frustrated :0(
