"modem is busy" error

Hi!

At home I am using dsl but when I am not at home, I sometimes need to get on-line via modem. From my ISP I got the call-in number, user name and password. That is all I need under windows or suse9.2pro (which I used before).

Now I tried to set it up under debian, but unfortunatelly that has not worked so far. I think I figured out that my internal modem can be found at "/dev/ttyS0", since that is the only choice which does not give me the message "modem not found". Instead, it always tells me "modem is busy" when I try to dial in with kppp.

I am using debian sarge with KDE and surely hope, that one of you could help me in any way. Referring to modems, I am a newbie on this issue.

Thanks for any answers!

Thanks for the info but it has not worked. I did the following and got the message below:

Code:
ruh31@Notebook:~$ wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf
Scanning your serial ports for a modem.

ttyS0<Info>: Device or resource busy
Port Scan<*1>: S0
ttyS1<Info>: Device or resource busy
Port Scan<*1>: S1 S2 S3 S4 S5 S6 S7
Port Scan<*1>: S8 S9 S10 S11 S12 S13 S14 S15
Port Scan<*1>: S16 S17 S18 S19 S20 S21 S22 S23
Port Scan<*1>: S24 S25 S26 S27 S28 S29 S30 S31
Port Scan<*1>: S32 S33 S34 S35 S36 S37 S38 S39
Port Scan<*1>: S40 S41 S42 S43 S44 S45 S46 S47

Sorry, no modem was detected! Is it in use by another program?
Did you configure it properly with setserial?
Do you have any concrete ideas?

Have you tried to use "chat" instead of wvdial, 'cause I know that Debian uses "chat" with ppp daemon by default.
In order not to spare time for you, here is my "chat" config:
Code:
cat /etc/chatscripts/provider
ABORT BUSY
ABORT "NO CARRIER"
ABORT VOICE
ABORT "NO DIAL TONE"
"" ATZ
OK ATM0L0DT0868929898
NNECT ""
Code:
cat /etc/ppp/peers/free.fr
#!/bin/sh
# You usually need this if there is no PAP authentication
# noauth

# The chatscript (be sure to edit that file too)
connect "/usr/sbin/chat -v -f /etc/chatscripts/free"

# Routing
defaultroute
# modem

# Default Modem (you better replace this with /dev/ttySx!)
/dev/modem

# Speed
115200

ipcp-accept-remote
ipcp-accept-local

# Keep Modem up even if connection fails
# persist
idle 180
# demand

debug
user your_login

And where do I enter the login-information needed by the provider?

I am already excited to try this idea out, but unfortunatelly I can't do that before Monday, so I will write back in a few days again ...

my ISP uses PAP authentication so I've placed these info in /etc/ppp/pap-secrets:
Code:
# client server secret IP addresses
 my_login proxad my_password
