Mandrake 10.0 eth0 ip trouble

My problem is this: I'm dual booting winXP and Mandrake 10.0 and I can't connect to the internet in Linux. The network is DHCP and winXP connects fine. During boot up I get this line:

Bringing up interface eth0: determining ip information for eth0 [failed]

Before it prints this line there's a long pause and Linux seems to be trying hard to connect to the internet. I'm a bit of newbie when it comes to linux networking so any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

I can't help you with connecting, sorry but I can tell you mine shows that same thing while booting (the Eth0 failed) but it doesn't affect my connection (adsl router via onboard lan). I think you have to use the configure options I found it easier to configure in gnome. (configure you computer, set up internet ect..) Hope you sort it out!

mandrake 10.0 connectivity

Huh, that's kind of encouraging. Yeah, I've been messing around with the internet configuration for KDE 3.2 to no avail. My NIC seems to be detected and installed ok too. Thanks the info though, I appreciate it.

eth0 failed after long delay

Yep, me too. I've been dealing with it for a long while. saw your post a few times while looking for the cure.
I SUCCESSFULLY tried this after not finding help...

Launch MCC (configure my computer)
Enter root password
Select Network & Internet
Select Remove a connection
Make sure eth0 is selected and press Next

This will remove eth0, sit0 and ppp0 from Network Monitor.

Now...
Select New connection from Network & Internet
Choose connection type (mine was ADSL) and press Next
select eth0 card and press Next
Choose type (mine was PPPoe, cable might be DHCP or PPTP) and press Next
verify DNS info and press Next
Start connection on boot, restart network (Next, Next, Done??)
Launch your browser.

At this point you should have only eth0 and ppp0 in your network monitor.
sit0 is a wrapper for ipv6 within ipv4 packets. (or something)

PS- if this fails for you, I can be of no help fixing it.
Perhaps a pro could go through the steps for us just to prove that it does not break anything and let us know.

when I was done I rebooted in record time. eth0 was up before I could read the text that was scrolling by during boot.

Good Luck.

eth0

I'm glad you replied to this thread because I've been looking for people who've been having the same problem I have. So I've tried the suggestions mentioned earlier in this thread and they haven't worked for me either. I know for a fact that I am using dhcp. My machine is doing the same thing; it tries to bring up the interface eth0 and fails in determining the IP information.
So what should I do? Is there a specific IP that it checks initially to get an IP assignment or what? Is there some way I can get that IP from my sysadmin here at school and enter it somewhere in some configuration file? I have a feeling we have similar problems webazoid.

eth0 [FAILED]

I got the "Bringing up interface eth0 [FAILED]" at boot, and this fixed it.

oops, me too. I accidentally replied to the wrong problem. sorry guys.

PS- after using my fix my network was fine for that session and my next boot. On the third boot my network was down but 'adsl-start' brought it back up. i had to run through the process again before things finally settled. sit0 came back on its own but i don't care as long as things work.

ive got exactly the same setup

heya mate i have the same OS setup as you...what you want to try and do is let it bootup and try and problem solve the connection using the configure your computer option in the xwindows...if you can get it working in this all you need to do is save the settings and make sure that under configure the network that the device (eth0) is set to start at boot...! hope this helps....personally i didnt have that much of a problem myself however im running a wireless network on my laptop most of the time...any probs just shout

when i installed mandrake 10 i was able to connect to the internet, however i did the mandrake update and downloaded updates for dhcp (there are two of them i think). After that i couldn't connect, even after removing and adding an internet connection. I didn't know how to remove the update, so i just said hell with it and reinstalled (only takes 20 minutes ). after that it worked fine... Did any of you select the option to download updates right after the install? or do it later?

I got the mandrake updates immediately after booting for first time. I did NOT accept the updates to the shorewall firewall script except for the bottom one of the three. When I previously did I lost networking -- but I suspect that is only 'cos I'm such a noob.

When I first installed Mandrake, I made the eth0 an ADSL connect to NOT start at boot.

THen, because the script doesn't like humans telling it what to do -- upon boot, I went to config yor puter, services and I chose to allow asdl to start at boot, and UNchecket network starting at boot --

no worries, flying freely about the internet and not a bad security score on the flank and grc sites.

hth--good luck
