Loopback interface won't come up at boot

I have an ubuntu dapper system with a peculiar problem. When the system boots, the loopback interface does not configure correctly. The physical adapter is OK, but not the lo.

Using GRUB I have booted into the recovery mode. This attempts to start the network. The eth0 interface comes up, but lo does not; running ifconfig yields no into for the loopback. Running 'ifup lo' gets me a message that says the interface is already configured.

At that point, if I run 'ifdown lo' and then 'ifup lo' it's fine, and I change my runlevel to boot.

Some files:

Code:
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
address 127.0.0.1
netmask 255.0.0.0

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.1.10
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.254

auto eth0:0
iface eth0:0 inet static
        address 172.16.1.1
        netmask 255.255.255.0

NOTE: I have also tried commenting out the address and netmask lines above, as well as the eth0 and eth0:0 portions. Same problems.
ifconfig result when it's working:
Code:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0F:B5:8D:74:F3
          inet addr:192.168.1.10 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

lo Link encap:Local Loopback
          inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0

          RX bytes:15051534 (14.3 MiB) TX bytes:15051534 (14.3 MiB)

Note that when the system comes up, this result is just missing the lo portion.
Last is some of the dmesg result (too long for all):
(There's some problems at the end I don't get, some problem mounting /var/run too, but it's there, so I am not sure what's up...

I am running Ubuntu and the part of my /etc/network/interfaces that deals with loopback doesn't have a netmask:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

Other than that our configurations look pretty similar. Did you add the netmask? I can't see how that would mess it up, but since I don't have it, it might be worth a shot to remove it.
