Logging into a Virtual Windows Server running on Linux

Hi Guys,

Not being a virtualization expert I thought i'd ask around. The Mrs has an old laptop running XP which is slowly getting slower, so I was thinking about the possibility of booting Windows over a network to her system whilst running my Gentoo server as her laptop will not be doing the processing it should appear faster.

I was thinking about the possiblity of Xen but then realised even if it were possible my CPU doesn't have a VT bit built in. So that leaves me with VMware which I guessing the free version doesn't support. Anyway has anyone got any ideas or suggestions?? Other than the 'get her to switch to linux then its easy' suggestion :-)

Cheers
Tom

Re: Virtual Windows server

Not sure what you are looking for as a solution ...

You want to run a Windows XP VM and have an RDP session running on the laptop (acting as a thin client) ??
I think the network latency plus the VMWare will end up running the same speed as the current laptop.
VMWare Server will run on Linux and you can create a Windows XP VM.

I think replacing Windows with Linux is a better solution.

Question Windows VM

Am new to Linux (just setting up FC6 on new Q965 MB). Trying to get started with Linux Virualization to use the VT tech on the Q965 board. You mentioned Windows as a VM, is there any docs on how to setup Windows XP and Windows 2003 R2 Server as images for the XEN and vert-manager?

Thanks for the help.
