Running Linux using Virtual PC on Mac

I would like to run x86 Linux using Virtual PC under OS X on my Apple PowerBook. Is it possible to do this using Virtual PC 6.1? Does anyone have experience setting this up? There is a version of Virtual PC that installs the software but doesn't include an operating system. It lets you install your own os. I was wondering if I could use this version rather than the one that actually includes a copy of Windows. I would like to run under emulation rather than installing YellowDog Linux because there are commercial apps I'd like to run that will not run under YellowDog.

Thanks in advance for all the help.
