list accesspoints

how does one get a list of ap's using iwspy/iwconfig?

i tried iwlist eth1 accesspoints/ap/peers/scanning, and nothing works.
iwconfig gives me the current connection. and iwspy just says no stats to collect.

aaaaarrghhh. frustrating.

i really would like any insight/ideas into this from anybody out there using a pc-wlan card and has iwspy running.
its kinda important, that i am able to scan for points. also, could it be something in the kernel that i have to enable?

im using the 2.4.22, with pcmcia support disabled, and the current pcmcia src.
i had enable wireless-lan support and the hermes(orinoco)card support.

the card's a wavelan lucent and the driver's orinoco.
