linux advanced router

Hi

I was wondering if anyone knew or had a list of all the advanced things you can do with a linux router.

I did a search on bandwidth controlling and found some really cool sites and topics on this site.

But i was wondering is it possible to do bandwidth controlling based on username? mac address? hostname? etc..

I know you can do it by IP. and i know you can put a firewall, and do nat with linux, but what else?

Can a linux router be made ldap aware and give certain users higher bandwidth compared to other users?

I am just doing some reason on my own and would be very happy if anyone had any further information on the type of advanced things you can do with a linux router.

I have alot of links i have read, but since i don't have many posts i cannot post the links, There I read the howtos that were posted, but nothing mentioned doing it based on username. Only IP.

Is this something that can be done by linux router? or is it only done by the proxy?

Thanks in advance.
