Linux 9.0 and Road Runner Internet Connection

I have a laptop, running Window XP in one partition and Red Hat 9.0 on the second partion with road runner as a cable connection. My problem is that I can't connect to the Internet using Red Hat 9.0. I set up an etho connection with automatic DHCP and still no luck. I tried pinging www.google.com and did not get any reply. For some reason, I don't seem to be detecting my network card. Can someone give me any suggestions?

do you have to use special software to get online in window?
or you just open your browser and everything is ready to go?
If that's the case, make sure your ethernet card is working.
try "ping ww.google.com"
