Question kdenetwork/samba (smb:/ ; service:/)

Hello,

I've just installed a SuSE 9.1 and on this precise machine I just can't
use konqueror with
1) service:/ in the URL and then clic on Windows Network
or
2) smb://server_name

I'm used to this method to navigate in the Windows Neighborhood on the linux
machines. Till now I've never had this problem.
Samba (server and client) are installed on the linux box.
The PC under WinXX see all the shares installed on the linux box.
But on the linux box itself I can't see these shares with konqueror.

kdebase3-samba is installed
kdenetwork3-lan is installed
(I've also installed kdenetwork-lisa even if I don't need it)
I've compared the /home/user/Network.desktop file to the ones on other
machine on which navigation in windows network with konqueror is operationnal
and there is no difference.

When I say it doesn't work this means that I get an error message in konqueror
which says No workgroup found on this machine, or No network found on this
machine, or send a bug report to kde.org.

I've tried to launch "konqueror smb:/" from a terminal window and saw the
messages
netbios name = the_netbios_name_of_my_server
workgroup = the_workgroup_name_of_all_the_machines (which is also in smb.conf)
but the shares don't appear (netbios name and workgroup are ok no mispelling in it).

Does someone have an idea where I should search ?
I've seen lots of messages on the internet about this problem but without any answer.
If you've had this problem could you tell me how to solve it ?

Thanks in advance
Nadine

What happens if you try smb://ip address/share name?
good luck.

Thanks for your answer

I've done the test. With smb://ip/share it's allright files and directories appear without problem.

It would be better to give in the machine name because my ip are dynamically
attributed (except for the linux box which is the server).

I've tested the name resolution with a ping it's ok.
I've tested smbclient://targed_windows_pc_name/disk_name on my
linux shell prompt and it's allright I'm connected on the targed windows
pc with the smb/> prompt
(= smbclient installed and ok
= name resolution ok
= share activated)

What's missing for konqueror to operate correctly ?

Try adding an entry in /etc/hosts for the name.
good luck.

The answer after waiting 1 or 2 minutes is (I translate from french)
A problem has appeared while loading smb://workgroup/machine/share_name
Internal problem
Send a bug report to http://bugs.kde.org
Unknown error condition in status : Network in unreacheable

When I type smb://machine.workgroup/share_name it's allright too
(my workgroup is my domain name)

What I would like to make working is clicking on Network Neighborhood icon on my
desktop (is available in kde3) then it opens with url service:/, then displays
2 icons : windows neighborhood and slp.
Clicking on windows neighborhood the existing workgroups should appear
and this is not the case

Hi;

I have exactly the same problem.
I would like to add that in one pc i installed only the client and it works fine. It looks like this problem happens only when both samba client and server are installed.

I don't think so because I've another machine installed with samba server and client
and konqueror works perfectly to navigate as described above.

I'm sure something is missing in this installation but I just don't see what !

It's amazing that on another machine with exact same hardware, installed
with SuSE 9.1 professional too, following same rules/options of installation
konqueror browses network perfectly and not on the other.

Have you looked at the installed software on the machine that works, for a comparison of what's installed?
good luck.

It's very kind of you.

The machine where konqueror network browsing is ok has
samba 3.0.4-1.32 i586 installed.
The machine on which it doesn't work has same version installed.

I had this problem initially with 9.1, it was solved some time later by SuSE in a YaST online update.

Thanks to you all who have tried to help me

I've just solved my problem. Here is the answer.
The pb is libsmbclient
The installed version I had was 3.0.2a and I just downloaded/installed version 3.0.4-1.27.
After installation with yast I openend konqueror with url service:/ then windows neighborhood
and saw the available workgroups and shares.

I found a part of the answer on bugs.kde.org

Hopes this will help you too
