Issues with Squid on Fedora 15

Hello All,

I'll start off by saying that I'm fairly new to Fedora. I have a pretty good understanding of how to use squid as I've been in environments where it has already been setup however I have never set it up myself until now.

I am using Fedora 15 w/ the latest version of Webmin w/ the latest version of the Squid module installed.

I am pretty much having 3 main issues:

1. Squid cache does not seem to initialize. When I click "Initialize cache" I get the following messages.
Quote:
Initializing the Squid cache with the command squid -f /etc/squid/squid.conf -z ..

2011/09/22 09:38:23| aclIpParseIpData: WARNING: Netmask masks away part of the specified IP in '142.27.255.1-142.27.255.126/25'
2011/09/22 09:38:23| Creating Swap Directories
When I click return to squid menu however it still says that I need to initialize the cache in order to start the squid. The really weird part is that I am able to start the squid regardless of that message being there.

2. With/without Squid started I am unable to browse to Webmin via an internet browser on any other system besides the system hosting Webmin. I am using http://SQUIDIPADDRESS:10000 and I have SSL disabled. On the hosting system this url works no problem but on any other system within the same network it will not connect.

3. Internet does not work on any computer using the squid proxy connection within the same network. I am using the default port 3128. All attempts to use the internet just result in typical page not found errors.

Anyways, if anybody can help me get this going I'll be very appreciative, I've been searching for answers for several hours now and can't seem to find anything related.

Got this figured out so I figured I'd post in case others are having similar issues.

In order to fix issue 1 I openned /etc/squid/squid.conf and added the line "cache_dir ufs /var/spool/squid 1024 16 256" near the end without quotes, saved and then the cache initialized no problem. Not sure why the default settings which are basically the same thing don't work but this does so it doesn't matter.

To fix issues 2 and 3 once the Squid initialized and started properly all I had to do was open the Firewall Settings under Application > Other > Firewall and then go to "Other Ports" and add tcp port 3128 squid and 10000 ndmp, finally hit "Apply" to save settings. Once I added those port exceptions I was able to both use the squid as a proxy server and connect to webmin from other computers within the network.

Anyways, hope this helps if others find themselves as confuses as I did.
