Issue connecting to ftp thru browser

I have an ftp server running ( fedora 4, VSFTP)
and it works fine as long as you use an FTP client.
However I can not connect to it using a browser.
I have tried both firefox and IE. I do require a log in to access the
server and I also have IPtables running.

Thanks for your help.

What URL are you using in the browser to access your ftp server? Usually it should be ftp://servername or ftp://user@servername. What messages do you get?

just guessing - did you try without a password i.e. ftp://username@ipaddress ?
Also, is there any message in your ftp server's log files?

Yes i just tried with only the following:
ftp://<username>@<ip address>
I then am prompted for the password, which I type.

I then get the same error.
I check /var/log/xferlog

and I see the following.

thu nov 2 17:23:14 2006 1 <my ip address> 0 / b _ o r <username> ftp 0 * i
