Is this the death of the adapter?

Suddenly my iwlist wlan0 scan command is failing with:
wlan0 Failed to read scan data : Resource temporarily unavailable <<<
Does this mean the wifi adapter just up and died? I see there may be other reasons. How to debug/repair this?
<<<Is the error message
I have no idea what the message means and my searches brought no help. It sounds as tho it refers to my adapter.

Have discovered this may come from a couple of sources but what seems to be the cure is: log out of Xwindows and back in, reboot, and/or removing /var/run/wpa_supplicant/wlan0. The latter does not always work.
