I'm sure if your read any of the news sites you've heard about the demise of BeOs. I've been using it off and on for years and was really pretty happy about the direction Be development took.
It's sad. One thing I've never figured out is why BeOs could get their graphic heavy GUI to haul ass while Win/Mac were progressively slower and less responsive. Probably a cruft issue since the Be engineers were adamant about cleaning the crap out of the code.
What are other folks' experiences with Be? I'm curious because I feel like a lot of people missed out on a promising operating system because it didn't even have the flavor of the month thing going on for it.
I have been playing around with BeOS since R5 was released. I thought it was very awesome. Fast, sleek, and easy to control and use. It is unfortunate that Palm wont release the source on it. A great OS that many could learn from is going to be lost.
In response to your question as to why the system was so fast, I can actually answer that.
BeOS used embedded multi-threaded technology throughout its structure. That and the fact that it is sleek as can be made it very fast and stable.
I also used BeOS up until about 6 months ago and was actually quite happy with their development also. They had something going, but like alot of comp. co.s these days, fell to the money monster like the rest. I was about to buy the 5 release until I heard that they were closing up. It's too bad...
