I have just installed Linux for the first time here on a machine at work. Please have patience with me!
My first problem is this: I can telnet out to other UNIX nodes here but the other nodes cannot see my new linux machine.
How do I determine what my IP address is from the command line?

You would use the command ifconfig.

Okay, that worked.... to an extent.
I can now telnet into the Linux box using the IP address but it's not accepting my usual login which works locally:
login: root
password: *****
For some reason it's telling me the login is incorrect. Am I not allowed to become root in a telnet session or something?
Thanks for such quick help!! Let me know how I contribute to this site... I have web design experience but I'm new to Linux.

By default you cannot telnet into a box as root (this is a very bad thing to do anyway). You can login as a regular user and then su to root. If at all possible you should drop telnet and use ssh.

Thanks Jeremy.... that made sense so I said to myself, "time to learn how to add a user". Went out and found a doc on that and now I can successfully telnet into the Linux box from elsewhere on the network...
Yay!
Now that I can add user I'd love to give it a name.... that's not so easy to find. Right now I have to specify the IP address in order to telnet...

When you say that you want to give "it" a name what is it? The machine..the user..???

I meant the hostname but I figured it out.... just type
hostname [desired hostname]
... couldn't be easier.
I've since loaded RedHat 7.0 on a similar machine and must say I am very impressed. I never got the GUI working under 5.2 so I'm thinking I might just upgrade it so both my boxes are ReHat 7.0...
Thanks a lot Jeremy....

ifconfig
I'm trying to use ifconfig to display my IP addrss on a RedHat 7.0 system and it's returning this:
bash: ifconfig: command not found
Why was it working before and not now? How do I get it working again, or find my IP address some other way?

sbin is probably not in your path. Try typing "/sbin/ifconfig".
