#echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/icmp_echo_ignore_all
An excellent point. Which brings up yet another. Can you ping that machine from others on your lan?

As I am currently at work I can't change do this

#echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/icmp_echo_ignore_broadcasts
#echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/icmp_echo_ignore_all

until I get home. However, when I tried pinging the Linux box from my Windows computer the request timed out. Which is the same thing that happens when I ping www.msn.com, so it is a likely probability that the Linux box is ignoring the echo requests. I will enter the above commands when I get home and see if it has any effect.

I hope that you know that localhost pinging does not require NIC. Basically you are pinging kernel

It works! Thanks for all the help. I guess when I set the security to higher it ignores echo requests.

Did you try pining your IP from some other machine in the LAN?
