installed native realtek driver, need advice to configure wireless

I installed the native realtek 8185 driver for my suse linux 10.0 laptop. I was able to compile and install the driver and had the link light go on when I typed wlan0up. I have not been able to connect to my access point. I tried ad-hoc and dhcp, however, I found the instructions confusing. I am able to use puppy linux with its ndis wrapper and windows 2000 driver and set it up using the wizard, however, the native driver has no such wizard, unless there is a wireless wizard in Yast? I have not installed the wpa supplicant. Is it necessary to get the realtek card working? My goal is to connect using dhcp and not concerned with sharing a network.
