I can only surf the web with the Tor browser

Good afternoon,

Happy new year to you all.

This has happened on and off for months, but recently it became permanent. I have an internet service at home, there are two computers, mine with Linux Mint, and another one with Windows. The two computers have wired internet connections, and the router also provides wifi.

The internet connection on the Windows computer is normal.

The wifi works fine.

My Linux computer, at the bottom right, indicates "wired", but I can only surf the web using the Tor browser, which is a privacy-oriented browser that routes each request to visit a web site thru three different IP addresses before displaying the website you wanted to visit.

I cannot surf the web with Firefox. I cannot download the Linux Mint updates.

Nothing that requires and internet connection works, except for the Tor browser and the Telegram desktop app.

Any ideas?

Thanks. Have a good one.

Axel

You haven't told anything about how your ethernet is configured. Are you directing everything to a proxy? You need an IP address, a DNS, and a route to the outside world. Do you have a fixed IP address. or does a DHCP server give you one? How is that server configured?

How is firefox configured?

What is the output of
Code:
ip a
ip route
dig google.com
Give the board some info.

Do you use the "Tor browser", or have you "installed" Tor, with the use of a local proxy?
In the latter case you have to tell all Internet using programs to use the local proxy...
If:
$ sudo netstat -ltnp | grep "tor"
gives:
tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:9050 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 15782/tor
as output, you know you use the local proxy.

In that case, you might uninstall Tor / proxy and use the Tor Browser if you need.
See https://www.tecmint.com/use-tor-network-in-web-browser/ for details.

Good evening teckk and remmilou,

Thanks for your answers. First, I apologize for my very late reply. I did answer as soon as you replied, but found out later that for whatever reason my reply did not make it to the forum. And at that time, I unexpectedly had to move, and there was no internet connection at the new place, so I could not use my Linux computer until just a few days ago. Thus I could not provide the info you asked for, either.

Anyway, I have moved back to the same place as when I asked my question, and for the last few days, the problem I asked about seems to be gone.

So if it comes back, I will provide the info you ask for.

Thanks again for your answers and I apologize again for my very late response.

Have a good one.
