how to send DHCP request without using ifup nor ifdown

I have two interfaces on my system, eth0 is a ethernet adapter, eth1 is a prism wireless. Both interfaces work, (right now, i'm in class on wireless internet). The problem is it's a pain in the ass.

what i do normally to get wireless networking functioning is to go to SuSe's yast, change the wireless settings, then go to the command line and type

ifdown eth1
ifdown eth0
ifup eth1

At that point, it will reset the DHCP daemon on eth1 and things will be peachy. What i'd like to do is to be able to use iwconfig. But the moment I use ifdown and ifup, my iwconfig settings are lost.

So basically, i need a way to send a DHCP renew on eth1 without using ifdown ifup. How can i do that?

Also, if someone could also tell me how to set the defaultroute out, i would appreciate that too.

Thank you for reading! Help me stop using the suse GUI!

assuming you are using the dhcpcd client (as opposed to pump, dhcpxd or numerous others), run "dhcpcd -k". see "man dhcpcd" for more details. there will be equivalent commands for other implementations of the dhcp client
