That sounds correct for all configs except the Bridged with no gateway. This is the config I'll discuss. So when you say "no connection" after leaving gateway empty, which computer are you trying to connect to (server) and from which computer are you trying to connect (client)? Also, what protocol are you testing with; ping? ssh? www?

Can you do a quick command and send the output( from the VM):
iptables -L -nv
iptables -t nat -L -nv

Thanks.

I have tried to connect the linux vm with the bridged configuration with another device in the lan (after leaving the gateway):
(ping from device "other than my host" -> 192.168.178.57 to the vm -> 192.168.178.36), but also from the vm:
ping from vm 192.168.178.36 -> 192.168.178.57 and other network devices from which i knew there where pingable at the moment.

I think I'd be looking at the VirtualBox Network configuration next. Go to File->Preferences->Network and remove all Host-only networks and all NAT networks.
