configure web server,name resolution,make it accessible over LAN and make secured

Hey guys am new on linux plz help..i have been ask to configure web server on linux, name resolution, make it accessible over LAN and making it secured and am blank where to start..my linux is installed on virtualbox

1. What Linux distribution (aka distro) and version?

2. are you going to use the default choices of webservice, database etc?

3. webservice; static pages only or interactive?

4. will it have a DB?

5. How secure do you need; do you basically trust others on the same LAN. Is it definitely NOT going to be available on the internet (even indirectly?)
You may want to read the stickies on the Security Forum - very helpful but they also get quite deep in places

I think part of the issue here is using a virtual machine. For most uses, a vm is like a real computer. However there are some oddities on using the networking.

Are you fully up to speed on the way a vm uses networks?
