How to destroy network interface

I have the ath5k driver for my atheros wireless card, and I used to have madwifi.

With madwifi, I would do "wlanconfig wifi0 destroy" then "wlanconfig ath0 create wlandev wifi0 wlanmode managed" then "dhclient ath0" to get wireless.

But since there is no "wlanconfig" command for ath5k, what is the ath5k equivalent to the madwifi "wlanconfig" command to destroy and bring back interfaces when "ifconfig ath0 down" is not enough?

I have "wlan0" and "wmaster0" in my ifconfig.
