Question How to change live servers

I have SMTP and POP servers running on 2 different servers (machines), DNS Server runs on a third server. Now I need to bring down the SMTP server to make some hardware changes.

What I am doing is
  1. bringing up the SMTP service on the POP server and change the DNS setting on the DNS Server to point to the POP server
  2. then bring down the SMTP service and make the necessary changes
  3. change the DNS setting again on the DNS Server to point to the orginal SMTP server
  4. shut down the SMTP service on the POP server

Am I doing this right? And are there any better ways to do it?

Looks OK to me but I think it would be more efficient to add another MX record. This way when a remote MTA seeks your MX and can't connect to the first one it'll automagically use the next one.
