How do I network between linux and Windows XP?

I am an obvious newbie, and I have my a computer with Red Hat Linux 7.3 on my desktop and a laptop with Windows XP both on the same router connected to my cable modem.

I would like to know how I can access files between the two computers, much like network neighborhood with two windows machines.

Thanks,

Robert

You will need to install the samba suite. Documentation can be found at www.samba.org. If it wasn't loaded during the install process you can find the rpms on the install CD.

You'll need to install samba <--- this will allow you to 'see' the computer from a windows machine, and then you will need to instal something else like xsmbrowser or LinNeighborhood <--- this will allow you to do the smbmount in a graphical way and launch your default borwser on that mount point.

What does do network mean to you? to share resources (files, printers, scanners) or just ping between the machines?

If you want to share files in a window's style then you have to read something about samba (man smb.conf) and smbmount (man smbmount). Then you can perfectly share files. If you want to have a GUI to mount remote partitions (ths is something that usually you do with smbmount) youll need something like xsmbrowser or LinNeighborhood. you'll learn how to use them in a few minutes, If you don't you can always post a question or two here...
