Help: ubuntu 8.10 and ALFA usb wireless gives hard lock up on PC (repeatable). Solved

Not sure where to even begin to fix this problem.

I have an Alfa USB wireless (awus036eh) plugged in.

LSUSB see's it as

Code:
0bda:8187 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8187 ..., ...
LSMOD shows

Code:
rtl8187
The thing will sit there scanning for an open network (there isn't one) and when it can't find one, the message pops up, 'disconnected from the network' and the whole system hard locks. EVERYthing is locked.

I'm just trying to get this thing up and running.

Solved: The answer is to install drivers from http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Download

It's a shame really.
