Help required I Can connect to Internet through Windows but not through Linux !

Hello All,
I am currently connected to Internet on my Windows OS through an ADSL Bridge/Router by XAVi technologies. The product is called as 'X7721r+' ADSL Bridge/Router. My computer is connected to above device on ethernet interface. I do understand 'TCP/IP' generally, and also understand how routers work, but the above device doesn't seem to be working in a router mode and if its working in a bridge mode I donot understand what things I need to setup in Linux.

As far as I could see there is a static public IP address (61.XXX.XXX.XXX) my windows uses. I have been able to set up same IP address on 'eth0' on my Linux OS as well as setting up the same default gateway as it is in windows but after this I cannot do a ping to the default gateway in Linux as I am able to do with windows.

I some how believe I am missing out on something here, do I have to enable PPPoE on my Linux part? Can somebody tell me how is the internet connection been set up in windows, what extra services do I need to run in Linux to be able to connect to Internet.

Thanks
Sreecharan.S

You should setup your computer with the following adress range: 192.168.1.0-255. Submask 255.255.255.0
The interface also needs the ip adress of the router, the dns server (ip-adress of router) and the gateway (ip-adress of router).

Hello keruskerfuerst,
I think you got my question wrong. The device I am using is not a router but a bridge. In this instance my PC is set with a public IP address. As you are imagining the above device is not a gateway it is just a switch that switches data coming on an ethernet interface onto a ADSL interface so the device itself doesnot have any IP address. The gateway IP address I so mentioned is that of the service provider which is a public IP address(61.XXX.XXX.XXX). And it is in this situation I am able to connect to internet from my windows but not from Linux.

Thanks
