Read the "Question Guidelines" link in my posting signature. You give us NO details at all (version/distro of Linux, etc.), why you need to add routes and for what, or anything else. We can't guess.
SFTP is part of the SSH service. Do you have it working already? Can you log in?

Ok, and how about the OTHER details you were asked for??? What are you connecting from (OS? Same machine or different? Same LAN? Firewall?) And you are aware that logging in as root is a VERY bad idea, right? You should never, EVER, log in as root over the network. I would most certainly disable that access if I were in your shoes.
To add on to TB0ne's post: where are the 2 machines you are connecting: both on your LAN, do you control both? Does the new user you created exist on the sftp server you are trying to login to or just on the machine you are connecting from? Second the "do not log in as root over the network", bad practice.
You can also approach the problem from this angle: Follow one of the many tutorials you find on the internet, such as https://www.techrepublic.com/article...rver-on-linux/ (this is just a random page that my google search brought up), and tell us what doesn’t work for you.
