Exclamation Help, help help help help

This is my post copied from the Linksys forums:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BEFRS41 V3 1.46.02, Aug 03 2004- home network?

OK, here's my setup, my problem and my question:

2 units, one runs Windows XP Pro, the other SuSE Linux 9.1 Personal. Both connected to a Toshiba cable modem via the Linksys router.

On unit #1 (WinXP) I have a 7.9Gb folder which contains every .RPM imaginable for the SuSE Linux system. I want to be able to access this folder from unit #2. I haven't got a clue how. I downloaded all those files from ftp.suse.com using AceFTP Pro.

My question:
Going directly through my router how do I get these two machines to recognize each other, and if that can be accomplished will I be able to access & retrieve files I need (from #1>#2)?

For starters I know that I need to enable file sharing for that folder & probably disable the firewalls but the folder is in my account & I'm the WinXP system administrator. I think that may complicate things but if so I should be able to move it into shared files.

I think this is the right forum for such a question however the fact it involves a Linux system may cause problems. Just please help me get started & perhaps then I'll go over to SuSE's forums for more info on setting up FTP etc. Currently, no network is setup on either machine. I hope you can all help.
Thanks
Tom

(*Just a note: You must think me insane for not downloading these file to #2 to begin with. Would have been nice however that system only has a 20Gb hard drive vs. a 160 on the other machine. Need to conserve space, ya know?)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I got no answers there. Maybe the post was too confusing, so here it is simple.
I want to set up a home network between a PC and a Linux machine. I want to be able to access and transfer files. I know there absolutely positively has to be a way to do this. probably 99% of the servers out there are UNIX & I can connect to them, right?) I just haven't got a single clue regarding how to set this up in my home. In SuSE, if I click on YaST2, and then go to Network Services I see NFS Client, NIS Client, NTP Client, inetd and so on. I open them and look and know here is where some configuration needs to be done but exactly what? I'm not going to just start banging keys randomly on my keyboard and hope something works!

Does anyone here know what I should do?

Go to www.samba.org - Samba is what we use to network a Windows and *Nix machine(s) together.

A hint: Try to set a more descriptive subject on your thread. Then people might get intereset in helping.

First you will have to get some knowledge about networks and what you actually are trying to do.
Have a look around in the wiki pages:
http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Networking

The most obvious for the mirror of Suse site is to setup a ftp server on one of your machines and use that instead of the official Suse mirrors.
